** Value For Money Tours For The Active 50 yrs + **
African Routes has been bringing together adventurous spirits from around the world since 1991 to share in the tremendous experiences which Africa has to offer. Until recently our adventure tours, for the 18 – 35 age group, formed the core of our business. However time and time again we were asked how strictly we applied the age limit and we received many enquiries from older clients. Thus the 50+ concept was born and we are now delighted to offer the “Big 5” tours.
Our style of travel for the active over 50’s continues to offer the safety, security and social interaction of a group tour. We provide clean, comfortable, lodge type accommodation, our vehicles are air conditioned and prices are affordable. We make use of custom built “Minicoaches” which boast coach seats, arm rests and seat belts. They carry a maximum of 12 passengers, keeping group size personal and encouraging a family type atmosphere.
We firmly believe that we operate most effectively in Africa only by being in Africa. Locally owned and operated, we have support bases in Durban and Pretoria. Our close-knit team of dedicated people in Administration and Reservations together with Operations and Training, all work together to ensure every aspect of the company runs smoothly and efficiently.
Our trips offer an unforgettable African adventure and excellent value for money. The time to visit Africa is now! We look forward to welcoming you.
How our trips work:
1. Price includes: food, accommodation, transport, crew and entrance fees (to game parks and places of interest listed in the itinerary).
2. Accommodation is generally a combination of cabins, bungalows, lodges and pre-erected tented camps (on selected tours). They are clean and comfortable with a rustic charm, not the luxury found in some hotels. The majority of stopovers are for two nights to minimise daily packing up.
3. Transport: 12 seater custom built safari vehicles with high viewing windows, coach seats and air conditioning. Travelling distances will be no more than 350 kms per day and normally considerably less.
4. Food: 3 meals per day are provided: by your crew/ lodge hosts/ restaurant.
5. Fellow passengers & crew: Mixed nationality groups (max size 12) travel together, enjoying the safety and security of a group tour. We encourage a family type atmosphere and husband and wife crews are generally used. African Routes tours attract individuals with a sense of adventure who are young at heart, enthusiastic and enjoy travelling with flexible, like-minded people.
Detailed itineraries, departure dates and flight information are available on request.
Note: Our vehicles and crew may be chartered if you have
an alternative itinerary or private group request.

Note that during the whale-breeding season (June - October) Plett offers excellent vantage points for watching the southern right whales. We climb aboard the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train (subject to availability). When the line between George and Knysna was built it was regarded as one of the most expensive sections of track in the world - today it is rated the most beautiful.

Driving inland over the Outeniqua Pass, into the semi arid region of the Karoo brings us to Oudtshoorn, which is host to many highlights. Stroke a cheetah at the Cheetahland Conservation Foundation*, visit an ostrich farm and perhaps even sit on one of these enormous birds and venture into the Cango Caves, famous for their beautiful limestone formations. A full and memorable day is rounded off with an evening restaurant meal in town.

Leopard Tracks
Namibia, a land of contrasts, offers stark beauty, abundant wildlife, vast open spaces and endless sunshine. Be astounded by the changing colours of the Namib Desert with some of the most impressive sand dunes in the world, which offer unique photographic opportunities. San rock art, geological curiosities and one of the oldest plants in the world are some of the fascinating secrets Namibia reveals. Windhoek to Windhoek 10 Days - Namibia
DAYS 1 – 2: Sesriem And Sossusvlei
Leaving Windhoek we travel south to Sesriem, where we spend two nights. Sossusvlei boasts some of the world’s highest and most picturesque dunes, some of which tower as much as 200 metres above the valley floor. It’s likely that this sand originated in the Kalahari some two to five million years ago. The amount of life found in these harsh conditions is surprising and gemsbok, ostriches and springbok roaming over the sand are a common sight. Climbing the dunes is energetic work, but definitely worth the view.
DAYS 3 – 4: Swakopmund
We travel through the dramatic Kuiseb Canyon to Walvis Bay. Apart from being a busy and important port, the lagoon at Walvis Bay attracts a range of coastal water birds including flamingos and pelicans. Swakopmund, situated on the coast is a place with colonial charm, resembling a small Bavarian village situated between the desert and the sea. The source of the towns’ continental atmosphere is the graceful art nouveau buildings dating back to the turn of the century. There are a number of optional activities* on offer including quad biking, dolphin and seal viewing boat trips, hot air ballooning or flights over the desert.
DAYS 5 – 6: Spitzkoppe
The seal colony at Cape Cross is home to a multitude of Cape Fur seals who flourish in the cold waters of the Benguela Current. The drive along the coast presents a strange landscape of fog and sea mist, salt roads and barren emptiness. Leaving the coast, we head east to Spitzkoppe, popularly known as the Matterhorn of Namibia, which rises abruptly from the arid Namib plain. The area is rich in rock engravings and paintings. We spend some time exploring these; the Petrified Forest where the fossils are estimated to be about 2 million years old and other geological curiosities including Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes. The area is also home to the Welwitschia, one of the oldest plants in the world.
DAY 7: Kamanjab
Heading north, the view of Damaraland is a colourful combination of volcanic landscape and savanna. We overnight at Otjitotongwe, a cheetah farm and rescue project where we have the opportunity of seeing these magnificent cats, now seldom seen in the wild, up close.
DAYS 8 – 9: Etosha
Established in 1907, Etosha is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, with terrain ranging from dense bush to open plains. The large salt-pan, from which the park takes its name, is an enormous area: dry and dusty in summer but often a shallow lake filled with water and a multitude of birds in the wet season. A highlight of your visit will be the evenings spent around a floodlit waterhole, watching a never ending procession of wildlife coming to drink. The wide-open spaces and abundant wildlife make a visit to this park an unforgettable experience.
DAY 10: Windhoek
After a leisurely breakfast we start the return drive to the bustling, cosmopolitan city of Windhoek with its stately historic buildings and fusion of cultures.

Our departure tomorrow morning will be an early one in order to cover the rather slow and bumpy access road to South Luangwa National Park.
DAYS 7 – 9: SOUTH LUANGWA
South Luangwa National park stands out as one of Africa's great parks. With an abundance of animals, 40 large mammal species and 400 bird species, it is the park in Africa where you are most likely to encounter leopard. Tanzania offers spectacularly different experiences in one incredible tour. Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are an intriguing mix of African and Arab languages and customs. Explore the island’s unique architecture and bazaars, spice plantations, coral reefs and palm fringed beaches. The journey to Arusha marks the beginning of our Safari into The Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. The "Endless Plains" of the Masai, host one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa which results in unparalleled game viewing.
DAY 1 : STONETOWN & ZANZIBAR
Leaving the palm-lined port of Dar es Salaam meaning “Abode of Peace”, we cross by ferry to Zanzibar, the “Spice Island” and home to Swahili culture. The island offers a fascinating fusion of African and Arab languages and customs. Stone Town is the old city and the cultural heart of Zanzibar. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab palaces. With its unique architecture, brass-studded, carved wooden doors, bazaars and markets, it echoes the Arabian nights.
DAYS 2 – 4: ZANZIBAR
We spend three days enjoying the spectacular beaches of Zanzibar. Optional activities* include: snorkeling or diving in the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean or taking a dolphin viewing cruise. Visiting the spice plantations and be dazzled by the sheer number of spices produced. Immerse yourself in the history of slavery during a visit to the slave pits, a stark reminder of the darker side of the island’s history or relax with a book on the white sand and sip cocktails while the sun sets over traditional fishing dhows.
DAY 5: ARUSHA
Leaving Stone Town, we board the flight to Arusha, where hope to catch a glimpse of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, generally shrouded in cloud but sometimes displaying the glistening snows of its summit. Arusha, a bustling, vibrant town is situated in the shadow of Mount Meru (Kili’s smaller sister) and is the starting point for our excursion into Serengeti National Park. Arusha is the safari capital of East Africa, where vehicles criss-cross the potholed roads, Maasai warriors in full regalia stroll the streets and tourists get a feel for what modern Africa is all about!
DAYS 6 – 10: SERENGETI & NGORONGORO
We explore Lake Manyara, the plains of Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater with a local operator.
Stretching 50 kilometres along the base of a rusty-gold 600 metre high Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemmingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa”. With over 400 recorded bird species, including thousands of pink hued flamingoes, this is a birders paradise.
Serengeti National Park is world famous for the annual migrations of wildebeest and zebra. The park is one of the best known wildlife sanctuaries in the world, where sightings of giraffe, buffalo, lion and all manner of game - gazelles, topi and kongoni, are common. At night the sounds of the leopard and the hyena interrupt the distinct ticking of the cicadas.
We continue via Olduvai Gorge, commonly referred to as "The Cradle of Mankind", to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As well as being a world heritage site, Ngorongoro is the largest intact caldera, and what many consider to be the eighth wonder of the world. Home to nearly every species of African animal, Ngorongoro crater probably has the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa. This is undoubtedly the best place to see black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the magnificent black maned males. Our tour finishes when we return to the bustling city of Arusha.
*Optional at own expense.

Kenyan Circuit
Kenya is one of the finest, and undoubtedly the most famous, safari destination in the world. It is a seductive and beautiful land that delights and fascinates all who fall under its spell. Experience Big 5 game viewing, outstanding scenery, beautiful lakes and fascinating tribal people. Combining the incredible wildlife spectacle offered by the Masai Mara, with the stunning beauty of the Great Rift Valley and the fresh and soda lakes of Naivasha and Nakuru brings together the best of Kenya in one exceptional tour.
DAY 1: NAIROBI
Our first day is spent in the bustling African city of Nairobi. The city, gateway to your safari experience, is not a prime tourist destination but it does offer attractions that are well worth visiting. Prepare for some interesting wildlife encounters at the Giraffe Centre and the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, in Langata. Enjoy a visit to the home of the pioneer coffee farmer, Karen Blixen - author of "Out of Africa". Step back in time and gain an insight into this remarkable woman's life. Views of the Ngong Hills can be admired from the beautifully landscaped gardens.
DAY 2: LAKE NAIVASHA
From Nairobi we travel west to Lake Naivasha, a birdwatchers dream come true. Home to prolific bird life and Africa’s largest concentration of African Fish Eagles, the Lake is also famous for its hippo population. Nearby is Elsamere, former home of Joy Adamson, who raised and released Elsa the lioness, immortalized in the book and film “Born Free”. The house is now a museum where we listen to a presentation describing her lifetime of conservation work, before enjoying high tea in the gardens.
DAYS 3 – 5: MASAI MARA
Named for the Masai tribes people (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and the Mara River which divides it, the Masai Mara is Kenya's finest wildlife sanctuary. We spend two memorable days in the park. Everything about this reserve is outstanding. Famous for its exceptional population of game, gentle rolling grasslands ensure animals are never out of sight. It is a place where Masai warriors share the plains with hunting lions, mighty herds and the timeless circle of life.
DAY 6: LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK
Lake Nakuru is a shallow, soda lake, set in a picturesque landscape of woodland and grassland. The Lake, first gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1960, is home to huge numbers of greater and lesser flamingo, which move about in a shimmering mass of pink. Lake Nakuru National Park, has the highest concentration of rhino in East Africa, as well as other game including lion and leopard, and the rare Rothschild's giraffe. This small park is well protected from poachers and the rhino have thrived as a result. We have the opportunity to visit the souvenir markets of Nakuru and sample the fine coffee that is grown in the region.
DAY 7: LAKE BARINGO,
Lake Baringo lies in the solitude of the semi-desert of the northern Rift Valley, a haven of beauty in harsh, rugged but majestic surroundings. In this fresh water lake hippo and crocodile abound but most visitors are entranced by the dazzling array of colourful birdlife. Bird watching is by boat or on foot. The area is home to the Njemps tribe and you may wish to take some of their traditional crafts home with you.
DAY 8: NYAHARURU / THOMPSONS FALLS
Travelling east, we stop at Nyahururu, Kenya's highest town, set amongst lush tea plantations and conifer forests. We visit the 75m Thompsons Falls and enjoy some free time walking or simply relaxing.
DAY 9: MOUNT KENYA
Snow capped Mt Kenya, Africa’s second highest peak, is regarded as the realm of Ngai, god of the local Kikuyu people. Traditionally, all Kikuyu homes were built to face this sacred peak. The small frontier town of Nanyuki, well known for lying on the equator, affords us beautiful views of the mountain as we begin our return drive to Nairobi.
DAY 10: NAIROBI
Our tour ends back in Nairobi. In the evening, there is the option* to enjoy a unique dinner experience at the world famous Carnivore restaurant. Every type of meat imaginable is roasted on traditional Masai swords (skewers) over a huge, visually spectacular charcoal pit that dominates the entrance of this open-air restaurant.

Great Waterways
This exciting itinerary offers the unforgettable sights of the great waters of Central Southern Africa. From the Victoria Falls we explore the untamed wilderness of Chobe National Park where great herds gather, the waterways of the Okavango Delta and Moremi Wildlife reserve, discover the Makgadigadi Pans in the Central Kalahari Desert, and the sounds of the wild Zambezi at night.
DAY 1: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
Leaving the town of Livingstone (Zambia) we head west, crossing the border from Zambia into Botswana. We enter Chobe National Park, which is one of the richest wildlife areas in Botswana and renowned for its great herds of elephant. An afternoon game drive in open safari vehicles or a river cruise provides us with memorable sightings of some of Africa’s most well known animals before enjoying a magnificent sunset over the Chobe River.
DAY 2: MAKGADIGADI PANS
Our trip today takes us to the edge of the Makgadigadi Pans. The Pans are all that remain of a large inland sea, which once covered Botswana. The open space is astounding and the wildlife is plentiful. We look out for herds of gemsbok and springbok, grazing in the grasslands. *There is an option to drive further into the Makgadigadi Pans.
DAYS 3 – 5: MAUN/OKAVANGO DELTA
Maun is the chief city of the Batawana people. It is also our gateway to the Okavango Delta, a fan-shaped oasis with a maze of channels, lagoons and islands, which changes dramatically with the seasons. There is the option* to fly by small aircraft for a birds eye view of this large and complex eco-system which attracts an abundance of animal and bird life.
Following sandy tracks, our transfer in 4x4 vehicles takes us through rural villages, to the edge of the Delta. We continue in mokoros (2 seater canoes, steered by a skilled poler), which allows us the unforgettable experience of travelling through the waterways of the Delta, where we hope for sightings of giraffe, elephant, hippo and antelope. We return to Maun in the afternoon.
DAY 6 & 7: CAPRIVI
We drive up the western “coast” of the delta to Northern Namibia. A birdwatchers paradise is how the Caprivi strip is often described, and we have the opportunity of seeing vast herds of Buffalo and Sable Antelope*.
DAYS 8 & 9: ZAMBEZI HOUSEBOAT
Continuing to Zambia, we board a houseboat, which will be our home for two nights. Spend the afternoon enjoying the peace and tranquility of the mighty Zambezi while looking out for game on the shore. The cry of the fish eagle and the explosion of colours in a breathtaking sunset will form a lasting memory.
DAY 10: LIVINGSTONE
Leaving the Houseboat our final winding drive brings us back to the town of Livingstone where our tour ends. Allow yourself time before or after the tour to experience the range of activities which surround this incredible natural spectacle, be it *exploring the exceptional museum or taking to the skies above the falls.
* Optional, at own expense
